Old Skool Cafe: A Jazz Supper Club Changing the Future for SF Youth

Old Skool Cafe is a youth-run, 1920s-style jazz supper club in San Francisco’s Bayview district where dinner, live music, and hospitality training create a pathway toward stability and long-term opportunity. Young people ages 16–22—many coming from incarceration, foster care, or unstable circumstances—run every part of the operation, earning wages while gaining skills that open doors.

A Mission Rooted in Second Chances

Founder Teresa Goines launched Old Skool in 2005 after witnessing the barriers facing young people in the juvenile justice system. What began as a violence-prevention program grew into a full restaurant by 2012. Today, the goal remains the same: provide a place where youth can build confidence, income, and a different future through mentoring and hands-on training.

A Speakeasy With Purpose

Guests step into a warm, vintage supper-club atmosphere with nightly jazz, blues, and soul. Dinner is served Wednesday through Saturday, and youth lead the entire experience—from hosting to cooking to performing—creating a night out that blends culture, hospitality, and community impact.

Soul Food With a Story

The menu features global soul food informed by the cultural roots of the young chefs. West African dishes, Southern classics, and international comfort foods reflect personal histories and mentorship in the kitchen. Diners frequently praise the depth of flavor, generous portions, and authenticity behind every plate.

Training That Transforms

Youth participants begin with a paid 12-week introduction to restaurant operations and life skills, supported by weekly coaching for housing, education, and wellness. Graduates advance into higher-responsibility roles and can pursue externships with partners such as Bon Appétit Management Company, Chase Center, and restaurants associated with Michael Mina.

A Gathering Place for Community

Old Skool Cafe is more than a restaurant—it’s a community space where creativity and opportunity intersect. The live music program serves as professional development for young performers, while giving diners an incredible show each evening.

A Call to Action for Bay Area Impact Professionals

If you plan corporate gatherings, team outings, or community meetups, Old Skool Cafe offers an unforgettable venue that aligns with social impact values. Choosing this space directly supports youth employment, skill-building, and leadership development in one of San Francisco’s most underserved neighborhoods. It’s a way to bring your team together while strengthening a model that is transforming lives and the local community.
