Social Impact SF

Social Impact SF

A grassroots meetup network for people doing social impact work across nonprofits, politics, tech and everything adjacent, run as an open calendar rather than a membership organization.

Who it's actually for

Newcomers, and people who don't want to join anything yet. This is the lowest barrier entry point in the Bay Area impact ecosystem, and if you are new to the city, changing careers, or just trying to work out who does what here, start here rather than anywhere else on this list.

Their own description is unusually honest about the breadth: meetups for anyone, "whether in nonprofits, politics, tech, or other industries," who wants to network, learn, mobilize, or make an impact in San Francisco. That breadth is the point and also the trade-off. You will not find a room full of people working on your exact problem. You will find a room where nobody assumes you already know everyone.

It is a weaker fit if you want depth in one sector, or a consistent group of the same faces every month.

What they run

Frequent meetups, panels, hackathons, and a recurring coffee, connection and coworking morning. The calendar also carries partner events from other organizations, including League of Women Voters programming and district candidate forums, which makes it useful as a hub calendar well beyond its own events.

Events move around the city and often land in other communities' spaces, including Trellis. If you follow one calendar to find out what is happening in San Francisco impact work, this is a reasonable choice for that one calendar.

What it costs

Most events are free or around $5. There is an optional membership at $50 a year that includes free access to their events plus discounts on Bay Area conference tickets. For anyone attending more than a few events a year, that pays for itself quickly.

Where

No fixed home. Recent events have run in the Financial District, at Trellis in SoMa, at The Foundry, the Randall Museum and China Basin.

How to start

Subscribe to the Luma calendar so events reach you, then go to a coffee, connection and coworking morning. It is around $5, it is daytime, and it is the easiest room to walk into alone of anything we cover.
