The Bay Area chapter of a global, entirely volunteer-run network for people working in energy — part of an organization with more than 40,000 members across 40 chapters worldwide. The local chapter is a 501(c)(3).
Who it's actually for
Early and mid-career people working in energy, climate, utilities, cleantech, infrastructure and mobility who want a network that meets often and meets near them. Both halves of that matter. This chapter runs more events than anything else we cover, and it runs them across the whole region rather than defaulting to San Francisco.
It is the strongest fit on our list if you live in the East Bay, the South Bay or the North Bay. In a single year the calendar has included happy hours in Oakland and Berkeley, gatherings in Mountain View and Palo Alto, a North Bay event in Santa Rosa, and the usual San Francisco programming — plus technical panels, facility tours, career expos and an annual sunset catamaran cruise. Most Bay Area impact communities ask you to come to the city. This one comes to you.
It also fits students and people early enough in their careers to want structure: there is a mentorship program and a scholarship program for students heading into energy work, neither of which is common in a volunteer-run group.
It is a weaker fit if energy is not your frame. The organizing principle here is an industry, not a cause, so the room is engineers, analysts, developers, utility people and policy staff. If your impact work is in nonprofits, food systems, housing or social services, Social Impact SF or Net Impact will put you among more people who recognize your job title.
"Young professionals" is the name rather than a rule, but the programming does skew early-career, and that is worth knowing if you are twenty years in.
What they run
A high-frequency calendar with unusual variety: networking happy hours, technical panels and fireside chats, facility tours, career expos and job fairs, workshops, and a social program that includes hikes, baseball games, wine tastings and picnics. An energy-justice panel has run alongside the technical sessions.
Alongside the events, two standing programs: mentorship, and a scholarship for students pursuing energy careers.
What it costs
The chapter does not publish a membership fee, and joining appears to be a matter of getting on the list rather than paying for access. Individual events are ticketed separately and vary — socials are typically inexpensive, larger programming costs more.
Confirm current pricing before you plan around it; this is the one part of their site that is thin.
Where
Across the region, which is the point. San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Santa Rosa and Tiburon have all hosted events. Check the location on each listing — the spread is the feature, but it means the next event might not be near you.
How to start
Subscribe to the newsletter, then pick a happy hour in whichever part of the Bay you actually live in. That is the whole advantage of this chapter over the others, and there is no reason to drive to the city for your first one.
