Black Business Owners of Charlotte (BBOC) is a social enterprise and 501(c)(3) nonprofit led by Black entrepreneurs, working to direct revenue and resources to Black businesses and underserved communities. Cathay Dawkins founded it in 2014, and it began as a Facebook group.
Who it's actually for
Black business owners who want customers, training and peers. BBOC counts about 5,700 registered Black-owned businesses and more than 25,000 group members. Food entrepreneurs in particular get a weekly sales channel through Black Food Truck Fridays.
It is just as useful for customers and allies who want to spend with Black-owned businesses and meet the people behind them. Dawkins, who still leads BBOC as executive director, also became president and chair of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Black Chamber of Commerce in 2024.
It is a weaker fit if your business goals center on sustainability certification. The Charlotte B Corp Collective is built for that.
What they run
Black Food Truck Fridays, which grew out of Charlotte Black Restaurant Week. BBOC says the Friday gatherings bring revenue to 40 to 50 entrepreneurs each week and average about 2,500 attendees.
Monthly business development workshops, powered by Google, for owners building their skills.
What it costs
Business development workshops are free for members and normally under $10 for non-members. At Black Food Truck Fridays you pay the vendors for what you eat. BBOC's membership terms are not published on its SHARE Charlotte profile, so ask when you get in touch.
Where
Across Charlotte. The Black Food Truck Fridays location has moved over the years, so confirm the current spot before heading out. Mailing address: PO Box 561191, Charlotte, NC 28256.
How to start
