Sustain Charlotte

A Charlotte nonprofit advocating since 2010 for transit, greenways, bike networks and better land use, with ambassador training, Biketoberfest and council alerts.

Sustain Charlotte is a nonprofit that has advocated since 2010 for transit, greenways, bike networks, parks and responsible growth across the Charlotte region. Founder Shannon Binns still leads it as executive director.

Who it's actually for

Residents who want a say in how Charlotte grows: the sidewalks, bike lanes, transit lines, trees and housing that City Council, the county and the transit commission decide on. Sustain Charlotte turns those decisions into plain-language alerts and shows up with supporters.

Volunteers who like structure do well here. The ambassador program trains people quarterly on land use, transportation and smart growth, awards a certificate, and asks ambassadors to represent the organization three or four times a year. Other volunteers run walkability audits, gather petition signatures and staff events.

It is a weaker fit if you want hands-on work you can finish in an afternoon. The Innovation Barn offers that every Saturday.

What they run

Advocacy campaigns and a free weekly newsletter. The events calendar lists City Council public forums so supporters know when to speak, and the Take Action page links to sign-up instructions for council, county commission, transit commission and school board comment.

Biketoberfest each October, its signature event: a family-friendly, car-free scavenger hunt by bike or on foot through neighborhoods, greenways and small businesses, now in its 12th year.

The Sustain Charlotte Awards, an April gala honoring local sustainability leaders. Tools like the Mecklenburg County Greenway Map and a guide to getting around Charlotte without driving. A partner network for businesses and nonprofits.

Sustain Charlotte is also a 2026 grant recipient of the Women's Impact Fund.

What it costs

The newsletter, volunteering and ambassador training carry no listed fee. Donations start at $10 a month; new donors at $10 a month or $120 a year get a T-shirt. Biketoberfest registers through Race Roster, and the Awards gala is ticketed; Awards volunteers get in free.
