South Bay Green Gardens

A public-agency gardening education program covering Santa Clara County, and the densest calendar of practical sustainability workshops anywhere in the South Bay.

Who it's actually for

Anyone in Santa Clara County with a yard, a balcony, or a plot in a community garden. The subject matter is genuinely practical: composting, greywater, drought-tolerant planting, pest management without poison, tree care, growing food you will actually eat.

The reason it belongs in a publication about impact communities is delivery. Most of these sessions happen in public libraries in San Jose, Sunnyvale, Palo Alto, Mountain View and Gilroy on Saturday mornings, which makes them among the most accessible environmental programming in the region. No membership, no professional credential, no evening commute into the city.

Set expectations: this is not a networking room. You will meet neighbors, not recruiters. If you want the professional climate scene, that is up the Peninsula and in San Francisco. If you want to stop killing your tomatoes and keep a few hundred gallons out of the storm drain, this is the best-kept secret in the South Bay.

What they run

Workshops, talks and plant clinics across the county, most delivered by the UC Master Gardeners of Santa Clara County, who are trained volunteers extending university horticultural research to residents. Some clinics run online. The program also maintains demonstration gardens, including the Palo Alto Demonstration Garden, and publishes fact sheets on stormwater, soil, planting and pest management.

A typical Saturday in season carries five or six separate sessions in different cities, which is why this calendar is worth checking directly rather than waiting for events to surface elsewhere.

Who runs it

South Bay Green Gardens is a subcommittee of the Santa Clara County Recycling and Waste Reduction Commission's Technical Advisory Committee. Funding and participation come from the Santa Clara Valley Urban Runoff Pollution Prevention Program, Valley Water, and member cities across the county.

What it costs

Not published on the calendar, which is the one real weakness of an otherwise excellent resource. The program is publicly funded and delivered through libraries and demonstration gardens, which is the usual shape of a free program, but we have not been able to confirm that from the source, so check the individual listing before you go.

Where

No public office and no fixed venue. Events move around Santa Clara County, including San Jose, Palo Alto, Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Cupertino, Los Altos, Milpitas, Santa Clara, Gilroy and the West Valley cities.
