Stanford has no shortage of climate research. The more interesting question is what happens when that research leaves campus.
On August 27, the Stanford Sustainability Accelerator announced nearly $5 million in new support for 33 projects spanning wildfire resilience, water, clean energy, agriculture, public health and industrial decarbonization. The teams come from 22 Stanford departments, but the Accelerator is explicitly designed to push their work beyond the university, helping researchers find outside partners, launch pilots and turn promising ideas into tools people can actually use.
One of those projects has already made that jump, at least in a small way.
At Pepperwood Preserve outside Santa Rosa, researchers have deployed portable sensors alongside crews conducting prescribed burns. The project, called SMesh, is designed to give fire practitioners better real-time information about weather and smoke while they deliberately put fire on the landscape.
It is a technology project. But it also opens a window into something much bigger happening around the Bay Area: the effort to learn how to live with fire rather than simply fight it.
The problem with "good fire"
For generations, much of California's approach to wildfire emphasized suppression. Today, land managers, Indigenous practitioners, researchers and fire agencies are increasingly working to restore intentional fire to landscapes where it can reduce accumulated fuels, support ecosystems and lower the risk of more destructive fires.
Doing that safely is complicated.
A prescribed burn can proceed only under the right conditions. Temperature, humidity, wind, fuel moisture and smoke all matter, and conditions can change across a landscape or over the course of a burn.
Pepperwood describes prescribed burning as one of its most carefully prepared forms of land stewardship. Burns may require months or years of preparation, and even on the planned day, they can be postponed if conditions fall outside the approved prescription. Trained crews continue monitoring sites after the active burn is finished.
That monitoring is where the Stanford project comes in.
According to the Sustainability Accelerator, the equipment available to fire managers has a gap. Regulatory-grade monitoring systems can cost tens of thousands of dollars and aren't necessarily easy to move around. Cheaper consumer sensors can struggle with battery life, durability and communications in remote terrain.
SMesh is being designed as a lower-cost, portable alternative.
The network uses long-range radio connections to collect hyperlocal weather and smoke information and transmit it in real time. The goal is to help burn crews evaluate conditions before ignition, monitor what is happening while fire is on the ground and continue watching for smoldering afterward.
The larger ambition is straightforward: if practitioners have better information, it may become easier to conduct more prescribed burns safely.
Why Santa Rosa matters
This isn't a hypothetical problem at Pepperwood.
The 3,200-acre preserve sits in a region profoundly shaped by wildfire. Pepperwood itself has been affected by major North Bay fires and has increasingly incorporated prescribed and cultural burning into its stewardship.
In June, Pepperwood planned a roughly 120-acre prescribed broadcast burn for ecological restoration, fire-hazard reduction and maintenance of a strategic fuel break. And in October 2025, CAL FIRE led a 70-acre prescribed burn there on land previously affected by the 2017 Tubbs Fire.
Pepperwood also works with its Native Advisory Council on cultural burning. The preserve distinguishes cultural burning, which is planned and guided by Indigenous cultural burn practitioners, from conventional prescribed burning carried out under state or federal burn-boss structures.
That makes the preserve more than a convenient testing ground for a Stanford sensor.
It is one of the Bay Area places where different approaches to wildfire resilience, ecological stewardship, science and traditional knowledge are actually meeting on the landscape.
The interesting part of Stanford's $5 million bet
SMesh is only one of the Accelerator's 33 newly selected projects.
Others are developing a wearable to protect outdoor workers from heat stress, tools to help communities recover after wildfires, systems for measuring water lost from municipal utilities, technologies for harvesting drinking water from air and new approaches to making cement, hydrogen and electricity infrastructure less carbon-intensive.
Taken together, the list is an impressive snapshot of what sustainability research looks like in 2026.
But the Accelerator's most interesting premise may have less to do with any individual technology.
Stanford says it selects projects with their path to real-world use in mind from the beginning. Teams are expected to work with people outside the university, and Accelerator staff help them find collaborators, practitioners, policymakers, investors and potential pilot projects. Stanford says its goal is to position projects to scale beyond the university within roughly three years.
That's worth watching from the Bay Area.
Universities here generate an enormous amount of climate research. The harder part is building the bridge between that research and the communities, agencies, nonprofits and businesses that could put it to work.
At Pepperwood, that bridge is unusually easy to see: researchers built sensors, fire practitioners took them into the field, and the experiment is happening alongside the very people trying to solve the problem.

You don't have to be a Stanford researcher to get closer to this work.
Pepperwood runs Learn & Burn Days for landowners, land stewards, new and experienced fire practitioners, and community members who want to learn about fire and stewardship. The program is generally scheduled on the first and third Thursdays and second Saturdays from November through March, with Pepperwood serving as the primary location.
Pepperwood itself isn't an open-access park, so visits require a reservation or participation in an event or program. The preserve also offers environmental education, volunteer opportunities and other ways to get involved.
For anyone interested in where climate adaptation is actually happening around the Bay Area, that's perhaps the bigger takeaway from Stanford's new batch of research.
Sometimes the path from an idea to impact doesn't start with a company launch or a major government program.
Sometimes it starts with a few sensors, a prescribed burn and a group of people learning how to put good fire back on the land.
