The Latin American Coalition (LAC) is a Charlotte nonprofit, founded in 1990, that promotes the integration, well-being and participation of immigrant and Latino families in Charlotte and surrounding areas. It works from 4938 Central Ave, under executive director José Hernández-Paris.
Who it's actually for
Families and job seekers looking for practical help. LAC runs family wellness, workforce, immigration legal, youth education and family support services, with programs in English and Spanish.
Supporters who want to show up for Charlotte's Latino community: volunteers who staff events and programs, members whose dues sustain the work, and the thousands who come to its yearly Día de Muertos festival.
It is a weaker fit if you want to try many causes before committing to one. SHARE Charlotte lists hundreds of volunteer openings across the city.
What they run
Through its Economic & Workforce Center, a weekly Workforce Workshop on workers' rights and job opportunities (Tuesdays, 1 to 2 pm) and a Professional Resume Workshop (Wednesdays, 10 am to noon).
The Ganas Mentorship Program for multilingual students and their families (Wednesdays, 6 to 7:30 pm). Health coverage navigation on Mondays, financial education, support groups, an Immigration Legal Center, and Community ID sessions.
The Festival Día de Muertos, now in its 22nd year, presented with the Levine Museum of the New South, with community altars, live performances, a Catrina parade, a kids' zone and food vendors.
What it costs
LAC's calendar does not list fees for its workshops; register through the links on the calendar. Membership is $30 a year on automatic renewal or $40 as a one-time annual payment, with benefits that include a free first legal consultation and priority or discounted access to workshops. The festival is free, with a suggested $5 donation; some children's activities, such as face painting, may carry a small materials fee.
